Bentley School |
| Overview | An independent K through 8th grade school in the Oakland Hills discovers its Major Conditional Use Permit is significantly outdated and seeks to legalize its enrollment from 200 to 360 students, childcare services, and hours of operation. | | The Challenge | After five years of unsuccessful negotiations and two arbitrations with opposing neighbors, it is uncertain whether the City of Oakland will force Bentley to "split the baby" on its enrollment, potentially compromising its educational services and financial stability. The school hires Barbary Coast Consulting. | | Our Work | Focused on working to frame the issue to educational opportunities in the East Bay, Barbary Coast works with our client to engage in intensive school and community partner outreach and mobilization, to develop supportive and educational collateral materials, to engage key decision-makers, and to form a strong, diverse coalition on hearing day. | | The Result | More than 100 Bentley neighbors, faculty and students, parents, and community partners email Oakland Planning Commissioners and attend the hearing, resulting in not only a unanimous vote in support of Bentley School’s desired enrollment by the Commission, but also effectively staving off an appeal to the City Council. |
