Armed with a 20+ year track record of proven success...That's Alex Clemens, Our Founding Partner
Alex Clemens is a veteran political operative who has worked for four elected officials in San Francisco and Washington, DC. In 2003, Alex founded Barbary Coast Consulting, which the New York Times has named an elite public affairs firm.
Alex is an lecturer at the University of San Francisco’s Leo McCarthy Center, where he teaches Masters candidates about advocacy and lobbying. He is a sought-after speaker at civic events, regularly breaking down and forecasting political trends and translating election results for Bay Area organizations including the Chamber of Commerce, SPUR, Leadership San Francisco, San Francisco Travel, the Coalition for San Francisco Neighborhoods and others. Alex is also regularly quoted in local media, providing political analysis and commentary for the San Francisco Chronicle and Examiner and Bay Area television and radio stations.
An accomplished lobbyist, Alex regularly meets with elected and appointed officials on behalf of his clients. He has been involved in two decades of negotiations (both inside and government) surrounding San Francisco’s favorite political pastime: debating location, height and density. Alex has helped facilitate City Hall, community and stakeholder conversations that have shaped housing and development policy on Rincon Hill, along Market Street, in SOMA, and the Van Ness and Geary corridors.
Alex counts himself fortunate to have worn many hats in his 25-year career: he has served as a political aide, a community organizer, a media consultant, a campaign strategist, a policy wonk, a lobbyist, a spokesperson, a private investigator, a professor, and an advocate. He has brought his skills to bear on behalf of educational entities, developers, ballot initiatives, health care institutions, sports franchises, telecom companies, non-profits, candidates for public office, community organizations, and pilots who can safely land an passenger jet on the Hudson River.
Alex serves on the Board of Coro, and is a proud graduate of UC Santa Cruz, where he allegedly majored in Ultimate Frisbee. He is devoted to his wife Priya, and happily parents Casey Rose and Benjamin. He’s been involved in public issues his entire life: Alex volunteered on his first political campaign at age twelve. (His candidate won.)
Through kiva.org, all Barbary Coast employees make interest-free microloans to people in need around the world. Alex’s Kiva partners are Lubov Gurnik, Nelya Alyegrush and Deo Likunga. Selling clothes in Nikolaev, Ukraine, Lubov hopes to expand her business and open another kiosk in the near future. Living in Kamenka-Dneprovskaya, Ukraine, Nelya sustains her family by selling pet supplies and rodent control products. A father of four, Deo lives in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and runs a hardware store that he hopes to expand.
